The prime minister’s office has informed Rashtrapati Bhavan that the governors’ conference that was supposed to be held in Delhi during the third week of August has been postponed. The reality, however, is that Anna’s fasting has shaken the government to its very core. The ED has made several unflattering remarks about the governor of a Hindi-speaking state and Manmohan Singh didn’t want him to be a part of the conference. And since the coming days will be more appointment of the governors (After the monsoon session of the Parliament gets over) and this Congress governor is sure to go. The party will hold the conference at a later date in November.

Totu Bose is a big businessman in Kolkata and is among those considered to be close to Mamata didi. It was Mamata who got him into the Rajya Sabha. This time, she has obliged Totu’s son, who will become a Rajya Sabha member on the 20th. During the last Parliament session, Totu approached the speaker and said that since his son was twice his size, a bigger seat should be allotted to him. A surprised speaker had to tell Totu that all the seats in the house were of the same house, and even if we wants, he can’t allot two seats to his son. The middle path was arrived at by Parliamentary State Minister Rajiv Shukla who assured the father that the nearby seat will be allotted to a slim minister. Only then did it look like the matter was solved.

While on one hand Congress Parliamentarians are doing whatever they want, on the other hand, several other party Parliamentarians have lost self-faith. Is that the reason most Congress benches in both houses are nearly empty and most party members are seen talking in the central hall?

The political corridors are talking a lot about a certain CD, which is said to contain proof of 11 prominent journalists in the capital accepting money. It is said that the sting operation was done by a former Congress minister (who is now a governor). With the help of a big BJP leader from the Bengali market area in Delhi and thanks to Yeddyurappa’s money bag, the governor was getting a lot of bad press by stories being planted against him, in which allegedly, 11 prominent journalists (both print and TV) were being bribed and taped. It is being said that the CD should hit the market in another week or two, and several people with clean images will see their reputations being flung out for the public to see.

What happened in the last week of July at the library of the Gymkhana Club in Chennai was quickly hushed up in a hurry. And it has to happen since it involved the son of one of the strongest ministers at the Centre. If the father is Yashasvi, the son’s tejasvi. So when he was found with a Page 3 woman in an objectionable position in the library, the police was summoned. But the police couldn’t dare to register a case against the man. The matter was hushed up saying that both of them were adults and since they are free to do what they want to, a case can’t be registered against them. Even if it happens in a public place? The son owns as much as Rs 5,000 crore and has invested his money in several media groups all over the world and so the newsmakers also chose not to make a news of it.

The PM is getting wary of his image becoming threadbare among the general public. He is said to be upset with his media advisor Harish Khare. So along with Vinod Sharma, several media people and known journalists are vying for the post. But sources close to the PM say that for him it is still Sanjay Baru whom Manmohan Singh can’t see beyond and who had earlier serve the PM. That means Baru may be back, again.

Elections are soon going to be held for the Hissar Lok Sabha seat left empty because of the death of Haryana’s veteran leader Bhajanlal. A new alliance may be born in Haryana with these elections. The BJP and the HJK (The Haryana Janhit Congress party launched by Bhajan’s son Kuldeep Bishnoi) may come together for the first time; in the last Vidhan Sabha elections, the BJP had contested the elections in Haryana with Chautala’s party. Back then Kuldeep had tried hard to form an alliance with the BJP but nothing came of it. In the Hissar elections, late Bhajanlal’s wife Jasma Devi may be the joint contender from the HJK-BJP alliance.

The party is upset that during the UPA-2, the PM is doing what he wants to and doesn’t listen to what the party has to say. When Pulkit Chatterjee, who is close to 10, Janpath, expressed his desire of being made the Cabinet secretary, the PM overruled it saying, “Whatever will happen will be according to seniority.” This “seniority” issue took with it Pranab da, who wanted to bring in his own Sumit Bose as the finance secretary. But according to seniority, the position went to R S Gujral. The party was most upset about T K A Nayyar and the PM was told that he wasn’t good for anything and that he couldn’t defend himself in the 2G scam and thus should be dropped. The PM dropped him but then made him his advisor. Now the PM wants to send Nayyar to Raj Bhavan. He doesn’t want to upset the Malayali lobby. People even say that Nayyar fell prey to the Mukesh-Anil rivalry because he was closed to Anil. It will be significant to see if Pulkit Chatterjee being made the principal secretary will make relations better between 10, Janpath and 7, Race Course.
