हमारी पहली मुलाकात अजीब थी, पर वे पहली नजर में मुझे भा गए थे, शायद मैं भी उन्हें पसंद आया था

मैं आकाशवाणी में संवाददाता था। तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री यानी इंदिरा गांधी जी के साथ एक सफदरजंग रोड पर सप्ताह में 2 दिन डयूटी लगती थी। आपातकाल के दौरान दूरदर्शन यानी टीवी में आ गया। हरीश अवस्थी दोस्त थे बोले न्यूजरीडर की जिम्मेदारी निभाने के साथ-साथ तुम रिपोर्टिंग भी करो और रिपोर्टिंग के लिए मुझे प्रधानमंत्री बीट दे दी गई। इंदिरा जी से सप्ताह में 2 बार मुलाकात तो होती ही थी। राजीव गांधी से आमना-सामना कम ही हो पाता था। इंदिरा जी को मैं ‘मैडम’ कहता था। संजय गांधी की मृत्यु के बाद राजीव गांधी का राजनीति में पदार्पण का यह पहला दिन था, अच्छी तरह याद है। सफदरजंग रोड का दरवाजा खुला। मैडम और राजीव जी साथ-साथ गेट से बाहर निकल रहे थे। लॉन में युवक कांग्रेस के कई कार्यकर्ता मौजूद थे। इतने में रामवीर सिंह विधुड़ी ने नारा लगाया ‘राजीव गांधी जिंदाबाद’। राजीव गांधी रामवीर सिंह के पास गए और बेतरह नाराज होते हुए बोले कि ‘मुझे यह पसंद नहीं।’ मेरे साथ साथ दूरदर्शन का कैमरामैन प्रकाश था। उन्होंने कैमरा ऑन कर दिया था। राजीव जी आगे बढ़े और प्रकाश के हाथों से कैमरा छीन लिया और उस एरिफ्लेक्स कैमरे की फिल्म निकाल कर जेब में रख ली और कहा-‘मुझे यह सब पसंद नहीं।’ राजीव जी पैंट-शर्ट पहने हुए थे। मैंने राजीव गांधी से कहा-‘भाई साहब,’ गलती मेरी है चूकि मैं रिपोर्टर हूं, यह तो कैमरामैन है यह तो वही करेगा जो मैं कहूंगा।’ इस पर राजीव जी बोले-‘वेन आई से नो,मीन्स नो।’ यह राजीव जी से पहली मुलाकात थी। पर मुझे काफी कुछ समझ में आ गया था। दो दिनों के बाद मेरे पास एक संदेश आया कि नौकरी छोड़ दो और राजीव जी को ज्वॉइन करो। मैंने वैसा ही किया नौकरी छोड़ दी और राजीव जी (जिन्हें मैं भाई साहब कहता था) से जुड़ गया। भाई साहब के दो बॉडीगार्ड थे रवि और महेंद्र। मैं कभी रवि के साथ तो कभी महेंद्र के साथ होता था। मेरा काम क्या था यह भाई साहब, मैडम और मेरे अलावा किसी को नहीं मालूम था। बहुत कम लोग जानते थे कि मैं कौन हूं। आर.के.धवन बस पत्रकार के नाते जानते थे। जॉर्ज थोड़ा-बहुत जानते थे क्योंकि मेरे कहीं भी आने-जाने का इंतजाम वे ही किया करते थे। सोनिया जी ज्यादा बात नहीं करती थीं, वह बस इतना जानती थीं कि मैं अमेठी देखता हूं। अक्सर अमेठी राजीव जी के जाने से पहले जाना होता था, चुनाव के दौरान तो ज्यादातर वहीं रहता था। राजीव जी ने एक दिन एक कैमरा लाकर मुझे दिया, मुझे कैमरा चलाना आता नहीं था। एक मीटिंग हो रही थी और मैं कैमरे का इस्तेमाल बिल्कुल अनाड़ी के जैसे कर रहा था। राजीव जी ने देखा तो मेरे पास आए, बोले ऐसे चलाया जाता है यह कैमरा, बिल्कुल नई तकनीक का है, फिर उन्होंने वह सोनी का कैमरा मुझे आपरेट करना सिखाया।
राजीव जी जहाज में हमेशा कॉकपिट में बैठते थे जब इंडियन एयरलाइंस या एयर इंडिया का विमान होता था तो सबसे आखिर में चढ़ते थे और बगल की सीट पर अपना हैंड बैग (जिसमें फाइलें होती थीं) रख देते थे। सीट के पीछे बॉडीगार्ड बैठता था यदि सोनिया गांधी या कोई वीआईपी साथ हो तो वह बगल की सीट पर बैठता था। बगल की सीट पर अमूमन उन्हें किसी को बिठाना पसंद नहीं था, क्योंकि कानाफूसी उन्हें सख्त नापसंद थी। सिंफनी म्यूजिक वॉकमैन लगाकर सुनते थे, हिंदी गाने उन्हें उतने पसंद नहीं थे। सोनिया गांधी के साथ अक्सर ताज होटल (मानसिंह रोड) में डिनर करने जाते थे, चाइनीज रेस्तरां उनका पसंदीदा था। स्पोर्ट्स शूज पहनना पसंद था। सोनिया गांधी के साथ शॉपिंग करने जाते थे। अरुण सिंह, कैप्टन सतीश शर्मा, तरुण गोगोई, के.पी.सिंहदेव, गुलाम नबी आजाद से ज्यादातर संपर्क में रहते थे। राजीव जी को मैंने कभी रिलेक्स करते नहीं देखा। कभी-कभी तो वह सोते ही नहीं थे। 3 बजे रात तक मीटिंग लेते और मुझे सुबह चार बजे आने को कह देते थे कि चलना है। चार बजे तैयार हो जाते थे। कभी उन्हें खांसी, जुकाम या बुखार होते नहीं देखा। किसी को नीचा दिखाना या किसी को अपमानित करना उनके स्वभाव में शामिल नहीं था, वे एक क्षमाशील व्यक्ति थे।
यूथ कांग्रेस में यंग टीम डेवलेपमेंट का काम सौंपा था डी.पी.राय को। जिसमें जिलेवार कॉर्डिनेटर बनाने थे। राजीव जी को जब भी कोई जानकारी चाहिए होती थी सीधे कॉर्डिनेटर से पूछते थे।
एक दिन वे शूटिंग के बारे में एक किताब पढ़ रहे थे। जब पूछा तो उन्होंने बताया राहुल को शूटिंग सिखाने के लिए पढ़ रहा हूं। चूंकि मैं अमेठी का इंचार्ज भी था सो हर दो साल बाद मुझे एक नई जीप मिल जाती थी, अपनी पुरानी जीप मैं अपने नीचे काम करने वाले को दे देता था, और नीचे वाला अपनी जीप अपने से नीचे वाले को। यह क्रम चलता रहता था। जमरूदपुर के एक गैरेज में गांधी परिवार की सारी गाड़ियां ठीक होने जाती थी, मैं एक दिन वहां अपनी जीप लेकर पहुंचा, मेकेनिक ने जीप का पुराना ऑयल फिल्टर निकाला और उसे वहीं जमीन पर फेंक दिया, बिल्कुल काला पड़ चुका था वह उसने पैकबंद एक नया फिल्टर निकाला और उसे लगाने लगा कहा फिल्टर सारे कूड़े कचरे गंदगी को अपने में सोख लेता है ताकी इंजन को साफ सांसें मिल सके, तब तक वहां सिध्दार्थ रेड्डी आ पहुंचा, आंखें गमगीन, चेहरा उतरा हुआ, आंध्र का एक उत्साही युवक, पढ़ा-लिखा मैडम का सबसे विश्वासी था, सिध्दार्थ ने मुझसे कहा कि हमारा काम भी फिल्टर का है, अपने नेता के रास्ते में आने वाली सारी गंदगी को अपने में समाने का ताकि वे स्वस्थ सांसे ले सके,जब हमारी मियाद पूरी हो जाती है तो हमें भी बदल लिया जाता है, बाद में हमें पता चला कि मैडम ने सिध्दार्थ को नौकरी से निकाल दिया है।
कोई बीस बरस पहले की बात है, अमेठी में चुनाव था। मैं और राजीव जी गौरी गंज में थे, गोधूलि बेला थी, किसी गांव की पंगडंडी पर हम बढ़े चले जा रहे थे। राजीव जी को ज्यादा लोगों को साथ रखना पसंद नहीं था। पास में एक बैल खड़ा था उसके तेवर कुछ ठीक नहीं लग रहे थे इससे पहले की वह हम पर हमला करता मैंने उसके सींग पकड़ लिए। राजीव जी ने देखा मुस्कुराए और आगे बढ़ गए। मैं तेजी से चलते हुए उनके पास पहुंचा और कहा-‘मैं आपके साथ चल रहा हूं।’ बोले, ‘यहां चुनाव चल रहा है तुम्हारा यहीं रहना ठीक है।’ मैं सोचने लगा पहली बार उन्होंने मुझे अपने साथ चलने से मना किया है। इससे पहले कभी मुझे किसी बात के लिए ‘ना’ नहीं कही। थोड़ी देर बाद वह दिल्ली चले गए। मेरी और उनकी वह आखिरी मुलाकात थी, अगले दिन उन्हें दक्षिण भारत के दौरे पर निकलना था। वह श्रीपेरंबदूर पहुंचे। उसके बाद जो हुआ वह सब इतिहास है।

If even a bird flies over it in a particular area, it falls down to the ground. The crash of the Dorje Khandu and the single-engine helicopter is being explored with the same possibility.

Against Swami Agnivesh there are letters by donor agencies against him, which have been distributed by Kailash Satyarthi. When Arvind Kejriwal was in the revenue services, there are documents about his deportment proceedings and documents about Santosh Hegde’s father’s trust, which also runs a medical college. All in all, there’s a lot flying around in Delhi, you just need to sniff it out.

It may be good news for the BJP that this time the party may make some progress in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Some top strategy planners of the party decided to send Sushma Swaraj to south India under an organized plan. And as becomes her aggressive stance, as soon as she took over the campaigning in the south, Sushma has started the spadework for the BJP’s entry into distant Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Today, once considered to hold her own in Kannada, Sushma can give speeches in Tamil and Malayalam for 12 minutes without stopping. Sushma finds Malayalam easier since she says its closer to Sanskrit. Election campaigning in the south meant Sushma has to devote a day to Tamil and another to Malayalam alternately. For now she is back in Delhi, practicing to speak in Hindi again.

Indian won the World Cup but there are still doubts about us having the real trophy. Actually, the entire controversy about the shield that is with the custom department, is a roving shield that stays at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. The winning team captain was actually supposed to get this trophy. But some of the foreign officials of the ICC who got the trophy into India asked for 250 free passes from Mumbai custom and when the department said it can’t, the entire furore happened. And anyways the roving shield is only for photo ops with the media. The real one is with India.

If someone wants to learn politics, he should do it from the Gandhi family – how both mother and son take every step in a measured and calculated way. The Congress has been successful in conveying the message that while Sonia is for the UPA, Rahul is for the Congress. Sonia is heading to West Bengal and so is the prime minister. Both of them will address the joint rally by Trinamool and Congress. The rally will start from north Bengal. Rahul, too, is visiting the area but instead of the joint rally, he will campaign for only the Congress contestants. Clearly, this will please that segment of Wes t Bengal Congress that is in favour of “Aekla chalo re” instead of the coalition with the Trinamool. The state Congress President Manas Bhuiyan is also of the same thinking, while Pranab Mukherjee is singing paeans to the party’s friendship with Mamata Banerjee.

It’s not just Niira Radia, the income tax department has taped the conversations of several big industrialists. And these have been leaked through an official in the department. Apart from Niira, conversations of Anil Ambani, Essar’s Ruia, and Videocon’s Dhoot brothers have also been recorded and hold a lot of information. The CBI had given it to the home ministry in writing that straight cases can be registered against a few based on the evidence and so permission should be given to arrest them. Chidambaram and Anil Ambani get along really well and so the home ministry asked the law ministry for advice, in the hope that the matter will be buried. Reliable sources reveal that the UPA government has directed the CBI that it should submit all the evidence to the Supreme Court and file a chargesheet there itself. The court can then summon anyone, and it should decide who is guilty and who isn’t. That means that the home ministry still hasn’t given the permission to the CBI to arrest anyone. But if the matter does manage to reach the Apex court, a lot of industrial houses may find no place to hide.
