Several well-known journalists are now expecting a seat in the Rajya Sabha through Mamata Banerjee – Aveek Sarkar, M J Akbar, Prabhu Chawla and so on.

The top leadership of the Congress is clearly divided into two about the issue of whether the party should support Mamata’s Trinamool by joining it or give support from outside. Along with Manas Bhuiyan, the entire state committee as well as Rahul and Sonia are not in favour of having Congress become a part of the state government. But that may not be such a wise move for the coalition at the centre.

He is into an overdrive to resurrect his political career, and he has managed to find a special place in the heart of not only Advani’s core group but Advani himself. The chances of Amar Singh’s entry into the Congress are still not sure. Sources reveal that he has been trying to meet Rahul for three-four months, but he hasn’t been assigned a time. So when he found out that Rahul was sitting in a dharna at Bhatta-Parsaul in support of the farmers, he made a headway to Greater Noida. But he could only meet Digvijay Singh, Parvej Hashmi, Raj Babbar and Rita Bahuguna there, and Amar sat with them for a couple of hours, but he wasn’t given the time to chat with Rahul. Like a Congress leader says, “He (Amar) is nothing but a paper napkin for us, but he wanted to become a handkerchief since he connected his beating heart with his eyes.”

But the Congress and its leaders will not let go off this Rahul Gandhi incident so easily. To aid Congress’ intentions, several PILs will be produced before the court. These cases are already in the court so it is possible that some PIL may come and join a case that is already being processed in the court.

राजीव की कैबिनेट में प्रणब मुखर्जी को कभी क्यों नहीं मिली जगह, एक बड़ा खुलासा
भले ही अशोक दुबे स्वर्गीय राजीव गांधी के कोई नाते-रिश्ेतदार नहीं, पर राजीव ने उन्हें अपने किसी परिजन से कभी कम नहीं समझा। जब तक राजीव रहे, दुबे साए की तरह उनके साथ रहे, आज राजीव नहीं हैं पर दुबे जी के लिए वे आज भी यहीं हैं, उनकी हर सांस में जिंदा हैं। ‘पंजाब केसरी’ से एक खास बातचीत में वे अपने भाई साहब (राजीव) को याद करते हुए भावनाओं के अतिरेक में बह जाते हैं, तो कभी यकबयक पूरे तरन्नुम में गाने लगते हैं जो खास तौर पर उन्होंने राजीव की यादों को समर्पित किया है-
‘…आज तुम हो, तुम्हारी खुशबू है
तेरी आवाज हर पल मेरे कानों में गुनगुनाती है
ऐ खुदा! यही मेरी जन्नत है, जिस्म से तुम नहीं करीब मेरे

कलकत्ता (अब कोलकाता) से कोई सौ-सवा सौ किलोमीटर दूर, सुबह कोई साढ़े नौ बजे का वक्त रहा होगा, तारीख अब भी मुझे ठीक से याद है 31 अक्तूबर 1984,मैं राजीव जी के ठीक पीछे खड़ा था,साथ में रवि (राजीव का अंगरक्षक) भी था कि अचानक मंच के नीचे भगदड़ शुरू हो गई, धक्का-मुक्की, शोर-शराबा,जनसभा का मूड बिगड़ जाने का अंदेशा पैदा होने लगा था। राजीव उस वक्त तक राजनीति में नए थे, पर अनाड़ी नहीं थे, वे समझ गए थे कि यह प्रणब मुखर्जी और प्रियरंजन दास मुंशी (तब मुंशी को गनी खां चौधरी का भी समर्थन प्राप्त था) के समर्थकों के बीच का लफड़ा है,आम तौर पर वे इतनी जल्दी आपा नहीं खोते थे, पर उस दिन गुस्से से उनका चेहरा लाल हो गया और वे झटपट मंच की सीढ़ियां उतर कर नीचे आए और उन्हाेंने गुत्थम-गुत्था हो रहे कांग्रेसी कार्र्यकत्ताओं को लगभग धकेल ही दिया, चीख कर बोले-‘क्या कर रहे हो तुम लोग? क्या यही कांग्रेस की परंपरा है?’ वहां मौजूद एक फोटोग्राफर ने झट उस क्षण की तस्वीर उतार ली, मैंने लपक कर उसका कैमरा छीन लिया और उसमें से रील बाहर निकाल ली, मुझे पता था यह तस्वीर वह बयां करेगी, जो सच से आगे की बात है। राजीव जब वापिस स्टेज पर आए तब भी उनके चेहरे पर तनाव था, पर वे सहज होने का यत्न कर रहे थे। उन्होंने माइक लिया और बोलना शुरू किया, अभी बमुश्किल ढाई-तीन मिनट ही बोले होंगे कि रवि ने आगे बढ़कर उनकी कानों में कुछ फुसफुसाया, रवि ने मेरी कमर पर हाथ लगाया बोला-‘अभी निकल लो।’ तब तक राजीव भी बोलना बंद कर चुके थे, वे मंच से नीचे उतर रहे थे, पीछे-पीछे मैं भी बदहवास सा उतर रहा था, कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा था कि आखिरकार हुआ क्या? तब तक रवि ने मुझे बेहद संक्षिप्त तरीके से बताया कि ‘मैडम को गोली लग गई है।’ मैं अवाक रह गया। मैंने देखा राजीव जी मंच से उतर कर पैदल ही तेज कदमों से एक खाली मैदान की ओर चले जा रहे हैं, उनके हाथ में एक ट्रांजिस्टर था, मैं भागकर उनके पीछे गया वे बीबीसी पर न्यूज सुन रहे थे। तब तक एक बड़ा सा हेलिकॉप्टर भी वहां आ पहुंचा। जिसमें राजीव जी, प्रणब मुखर्जी, के.वी.पन्निकर, मैं, रवि तथा डिफेंस के कुछ लोग बैठे, हेलिकॉप्टर ने कलकत्ता एयरपोर्ट के लिए उड़ान भरी। मैंने राजीव जी की ओर ध्यान से देखा जैसे वह अपने मनोभावों को संयत करने का प्रयास कर रहे थे, उन्होंने अपने हैंड बैग से एक खूबसूरत-सा नेपकिन का डिब्बा निकाला, गीला, खुशबूदार नेपकिन, मुझे, प्रणब सबको उन्होंने एक-एक नेपकिन दिए, फिर अपना चेहरा पोंछा। फिर अपने उसी बैग से उन्होंने एक सेब निकाला, उसे करीने से काटा और एक-एक टुकड़ा सेब का हम सबको दिया। थोड़ी देर बाद हम कलकत्ता में उतरे तो वहां पहले से ही एक बड़ा यात्री जहाज खड़ा था। जहाज में बलराम जाखड़, बंगाल के तत्कालीन गवर्नर और हम सब सवार हो गए। राजीव जी अक्सर उड़ानों में कॉकपिट में ही बैठ जाया करते थे, पर उस रोज वे कॉकपिट का दरवाजा पकड़ कर खड़े थे, एक अजीब सी स्थितप्रज्ञता लिए। तभी पीछे से एक तेज रौबदार आवाज गूंजी-‘राजीव, लिसेन…’ राजीव जी ने घूमकर आवाज की दिशा की ओर देखा, उस वक्त उनकी आंखें सुर्ख लाल थीं, चेहरा बेतरह खिंचा हुआ। मैंने गर्दन पीछे घुमाई तो पाया कि प्रणब थे, पाइप पी रहे थे। मैंने पन्निकर से कहा-‘आज तो बंगाली काम से गया।’ इतिहास गवाह है कि राजीव जी की कैबिनेट में कभी प्रणब मुखर्जी को जगह नहीं मिली। दिल्ली में जहाज जैसे ही टेक्किनल एरिया में पहुंचा मैंने देखा सबसे आगे अमिताभ बच्चन खड़े हैं अरुण सिंह के साथ, राजीव के उतरते ही अमिताभ ने उन्हें गले लगा लिया, दोनों कुछ देर तक वैसे ही रहे, उनकी आंखें गमगीन थीं, हम भी अपना रोना नहीं रोक पा रहे थे। वे अमिताभ के साथ गाड़ी में बैठकर सीधे एम्स की ओर चले गए। हम अरुण सिंह की गाड़ी में थे, जैसे ही हम आइएनए के पास पहुंचे हर तरह धुएं का गुबार उठता दिखा, टायर जल रहे थे, माहौल में अजीब सी बेचैनी थी। एम्स से वापिस लौटते हुए ड्राइवर ने रेडियो लगा दिया था, खबर आ रही थी कि राजीव गांधी ने अभी-अभी प्रधानमंत्री पद की शपथ ली। मेरी आंखें गीली थी, मैं खिड़की से बाहर की ओर देखने लग गया। मुझे आज भी यह बात समझ में नहीं आ रही कि शीला दीक्षित ने राजीव जी की मौत के 20 साल बाद आज ऐसा बयान क्यों दिया कि जब इंदिरा जी को गोली लगी तो वह राजीव जी के साथ एक ही विमान पर सवार होकर दिल्ली के लिए उड़ी थीं और रास्ते में उन्हें पायलट ने सूचना दी कि इंदिरा जी को गोली लग गई है और वह हमारे बीच नहीं रही हैं। जबकि हकीकत यह है कि शीला जी तो उस विमान में थी ही नहीं, तो वह ऐसा क्यों कह रही हैं? क्या मालूम सियासत की लत ज्यादा लग गई हो।

What was Chief Election Commissioner S Y Qureishi doing on Friday evening? By then the election results from the five states were out. Qureishi is pretty content with the fact that he managed to hold peaceful elections on the Bihar pattern even in a state like West Bengal. So, he could be seen on Friday evening at the Kamani Auditorium at Mandi House, enjoying “Kharaashein”, cinematographed by Salim Aarif and written by Gulzar. Gulzar was present for the show and was sitting next to Qureishi.

Despite efforts by the Sangh and Gadkari, Uma Bharti’s entry into the BJP has been postponed for the time being. Gadkari brought the matter at the party forum during the recent core group meeting, but the second-tier leaders made their displeasure openly known about the president’s decision. Anant Kumar was the first to speak against it, “What work does Uma have in UP?” Jaitley and Venkaiah went next and at the end, Sushma too vented her feelings and spoke about how Shivraj Singh Chauhan also has fears and misgivings and that should be clarified first. For now Uma is working with the “Clean Ganga” movement but equally important is the cleanliness of the BJP leaders’ minds and hearts.

The scene at President’s House in Kabul during the joint press conference with Afghanistan President Karzai and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was a different one. The journalists from India (especially from the Hindi media) who had accompanied the PM faced an uncomfortable situation when they were forbidden to ask questions from their own leader. It was pre-decided which Indian journalist will ask the question and what the question will be. PM’s media advisor Harish Khare had managed the entire thing will a lot of cleverness, and among the Indian news channels, two journalists from two English news channels were called upon by Manmohan Singh himself. Clearly, there were some questions that had not been answered. The PMO may have to answer these in the near future.

With the Vidhan Sabha election results out for five states, the politics at the centre is rife with new alliances and possibilities. With whispers of Kanimozhi’s possible arrest, a new, unproven news is doing the rounds in the haze of Delhi politics. It is that Karuna’s son Azhaigri has given his resignation from the central Cabinet, and now there is speculation that the ministers from the DMK quota may bid adieu to the Manmohan government at any time. The black-sunglasses clad baba is seriously mulling whether the DMK government should give external support to the UPA government? This is the moot question that is making the Congress managers frown.
