Upper House Battle

July 09 2018

The contest for the Rajya Sabha deputy speaker is hotting up, and the ruling BJP is out to find a candidate from among one of its allies, to send a message across a turbulent political sea that the party indeed is serious – after four failed years – of getting every ally on the same boat. Thus it is that the name of Naresh Gujral of the Shiromani Akali Dal is bobbing up and down in saffron foils. On the other side of the fence, though, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is upping the name of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, the Trinamool Congress MP, to give a fillip to the now flowering opposition unity against the BJP. But he is yet to secure unanimity among the opposition parties over this candidate of his choice.
