The saffron plan for J’khand

November 17 2019

For the 81 seats of Jharkhand assembly, BJP high command has divided the voting into 5 stages so that its star campaigners get enough time for campaigning. BJP is steadfast in its ‘Mission 65’, but the results of Haryana-Maharashtra have dampened its spirits. Anyway, there is a triangular fight this time. Looking at the castes in Jharkhand, there are close to 1/4th of Adivasi voters which were disappointed with BJP when it appointed Raghubar Das, a non-Adivasi as the CM of the state. Sighting their unhappiness, BJP is now focussing on Santhal Pargana. By making Arjun Munde a central minister, the saffron party tried to please Adivasis. There are 17 percent Kurmi votes, 14 percent Banias and 10 percent from upper castes. BJP has also worked on Yadav’s and was successful in bringing a big leader of Yadavs — Annapurna Devi into BJP. To please Yadav’s, Nand Kishor Yadav was made co-incharge. The BJP seems to be successful in making a dent in the RJD’s traditional Yadav vote bank. With AJSU, it looks to garner some Kurmi votes as well.
