SP Weds BSP?

November 05 2018

Wedding bells of an alliance are ringing in the City of Nabobs, Lucknow. And it is not so sweet to the ears of BJP president Amit Shah. By now, it is clear to all parties that the name of the game in the coming polls season will be critical alliances, and even former bitter enemies like Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samajwadi party have shed their animus. Even the BJP’s internal survey says that if the SP and BSP go it alone, BJP could touch the 70 seats mark. If the former enemies join hands then the saffron party could be washed out. Thus it is that the long meeting recently between Mayawati and Alkhilesh Yadav has sent more than just ripples in the political arena. Sources say that the meeting took place late night at the farm house of SP member of Rajya Sabha and a major realtor of UP, Sanjay Seth. So much so that both the leaders jumped their security cordons to keep the meet secret. The meeting was supposed to start at 10.30 pm but Maya reached a little late, at around 11.45. The discussions lasted for more than two hours. Initially, Mayawati demanded 50 of the 80 LS seats, whereas Akhilesh was looking at a half-and-half scenario. The owls from Seth’s farm garden are hooting that now, neither party will put up candidates from Congress’ mother-and-son’s Rae Bareili and Amethi. Akhilesh has also agreed to concede two more seats to Rashtriya Lok Dal of Ajit Singh. We hear now that BSP will contest from 45 seats and SP from 31. A core group of three members each from both parties has been set up to give final shape to this alliance, and also decide the seats that will go to each party. The last small hitch was the day of formally announcing the alliance. Mayawati wanted this to be announced on January 1, 2019, but Akhilesh had felt that according to the lunar calendar, days before January 14 are inauspicious. However, Mayawati shot that argument down. So the alliance is in the offing, awaiting only a clear road map.
