Relief From Relegation

November 12 2018

The NCP, CPIM and BSP has received a breather from the Election Commission, and they may yet retain their status as ‘national parties’. After the 2014 elections, the poll governor had sent show cause notice asking why they should not be stripped of that status. The law says that to remain a national party, the organisation must poll six per cent votes in four assembly elections, or at least two per cent votes in total out of all the votes polled in any three states for the Lok Sabha. By these definitions, none of the three parties qualified. But in 2016 has come a ruling from the Commission that on the issue of national parties, there will be a review of the 2014 polls after 10 years. So these parties will retain their status till 2024.
