Reinventing RSS

September 18 2018

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is hell bent on trying to gain back the lost confidence of the people on its preachings. In this connection, it is organising a three-day conclave in New Delhi’s elite venue, Vigyan Bhavan. The topic: ‘Future of Bharat: An RSS Perspective’. Over the first two days, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will dwell on the RSS’s ideology. On the third day, there will be a Q&A session, but, and a big but: written questions will have to be given in advance, and only then will these be answered. Bhagwat does not want to face a sudden embarrassment, obviously.
What is interesting is that in this seminal conclave, there will be representatives of not just the various outlying flanges of the RSS affiliates, but also reps from the film and entertainment worlds, business magnets, social luminaries, as also international faces from China, etc. On the political front, reps of Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and DMK have been sent invites for the ideological gala.
But the Sangh mandarins could not find unanimity regarding inviting Rahul Gandhi.
Interestingly, while China has been invited by the RSS, Pakistan has been not. The thinking within the RSS is that China has been a cultural ally of India for centuries, whereas Pakistan has betrayed India, killing our soldiers.
Must be noted: Bollywood Badshah Shahrukh Khan will entertain the saffron cadre in a chai pe charcha on the first evening of the conclave, that is September 17.
All this goes to show that the Sangh bosses have no confidence over the BJP leadership in the way it has worn for the worse the sharp barbs by Congress president Rahul Gandhi against it. That is why the Sangh top henchmen have come out of the wings to centerstage to manage the image of the RSS. Bhagwat now seems determined to wave off the ‘misinformation’ barrage regarding the Sangh, which may have been crafted carefully by opponents, or may have cropped up on its own. The Sangh members are now expected to decant the ‘nectar’ arising out of this churning, a la the ancient story of the churning of the Ocean seeking the nectar of eternal life. The Sangh has more than 60,000 branches and more than three dozen affiliate organisations. Apart from that, it runs 65,000 ‘ekal’ (single teacher) schools. So it is clear that the Sangh is bending over backwards to dilute its hard core Hindutva image.
