One Seat, Many Contenders

February 12 2019

Amid heavy competition for ticket, an important decision has come from the BJP high-command on the Bengaluru Central seat, which fell vacant after the sudden demise of Ananth Kumar. If sources are to be believed then party president Amit Shah has almost decided to give ticket to the late veteran leader’s wife Tejaswini. In any case, Tejaswini has been active in politics for quite some time now.
But this seat is also a matter of concern between state coalition partners Congress and JD(S). Although as per the seat share this constituency falls under Congress’s part of the coalition, but now JD(S) is stating claim over it. The reason being very clear: Ever since the speculations of no single party being able to attain majority, leading to formation of a mixed government, are rife, many silent politicians have started appearing out of nowhere. One such leader is former prime minister Deve Gowda.
Although Deve Gowda had bid adieu to politics, but now he too wants to contest the polls and make way for Lok Sabha. And Bengaluru Central is just perfect for him as he lives in this area only and health issues do not make it easy for him to be on the move.
But Congress has its own terms and conditions for sparing this seat for JD(S). The party wants the Mandaya Lok Sabha seat in return from where it wants to contest popular Kannad actor-politician Ambareesh’s wife. Ambareesh, who enjoyed a huge fan following in the state, passed away a few months back only.
On the other hand, CM Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil too eyes the same seat and wants to contest the Lok Sabha elections from here. Since this is JD(S)’s predominant seat, the party had bagged all 8 constituencies in the last assembly elections. And so Nikhil finds the seat best suited to pilot his political career.
