A Bust Up Diwali

November 12 2018

Member of Parliament Supriya Sule, daughter of Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar had organised a gala in a Pune farmhouse to celebrate Diwali last week. Guests included top industrialists from Pune and Mumbai, film stars, cricketers, media bosses and others. The party was in full swing when, at around post-midnight, a posse of Pune cops landed up and wanted to stop it. The police said it was merely executing an order of the Pune Municipal Corporation that all revelry must stop by 11 pm. This news of police intervention mightily peeved Pawar, who right away called up chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and expressed his ire. Fadnavis had a ready excuse: he was not at all aware of this. The CM then called up Pune police chief, whose response was even more startling. His men had no idea that the farmhouse had any link with the Pawar family. He said the name plate outside the farmhouse read, “Sadanand Sule”, so how would the policemen know that he is Pawar’s son-in-law? The incident thus clearly shows that Pawar and the BJP government are at loggerheads. Naturally, because Pawar’s frequent showering of praises on Rahul Gandhi has made the saffron bitter.
